SEND at Highfield

Welcome to the Special Needs section. In this section, there is information about the Special Needs provision available at Highfield Primary School.

At Highfield, the special educational needs coordinator (SENCO) is Mrs Hackett whose email is SENCO@highfieldcps.co.uk

As a result of discussions between staff and the special needs coordinator, classroom teachers carefully plan and differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of special needs children. The SENCO liaises closely with teachers and support staff to ensure that the children’s needs are being met within the classroom.

Definition

The Education Act 1996 says that a child has special educational needs (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

A learning difficulty means that the child either:

  • Has significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of children of the same age
  • Has a disability, which either prevents or hinders the child from making use of the educational facilities which are provided for children of the same age in a mainstream school

Special educational provision means educational provision, which is additional to, or different from, the provision made generally for children of the same age in a mainstream school. At Highfield Primary School we are committed to meeting the special educational needs of pupils and ensuring that they make progress.

What to do if I am concerned about my child's progress

At Highfield, we are committed to working in partnership with parents and carers to provide the best possible support for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). If you have any concerns regarding the SEN support provided for your child, we encourage you to first discuss these informally with the class teacher or our SENCO, Mrs Hackett. If the matter remains unresolved, parents may follow the school’s formal complaints procedure, which can be found in full on our Policies page. This process includes a formal investigation stage and, if necessary, a hearing before a panel that includes at least one member independent of the school’s management. We aim to resolve all SEN-related concerns swiftly and transparently to ensure the continued progress and well-being of our students.
